AWS AI Practitioner vs Cloud Practitioner: Which to Take First?
An independent comparison of AWS AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) and Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) to help you decide which foundational cert to take first.
AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) and AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) are both foundational, no-code certifications, and people often ask which to take first. They serve different goals, so the right answer depends on where you are headed. Independent comparison, no vendor affiliation.
What each one covers
- Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02): broad AWS literacy. Core services, the shared responsibility model, pricing and billing, security basics, and how the cloud fits a business.
- AI Practitioner (AIF-C01): AI and generative AI literacy in an AWS context. Machine learning basics, foundation models, prompting, retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning, and responsible AI.
Which to take first
- New to AWS entirely: start with Cloud Practitioner. It gives you the cloud foundation the AI cert assumes you loosely have.
- Already comfortable with cloud basics and focused on AI: go straight to AI Practitioner. It is the more current, differentiated signal in 2026.
- Want both: Cloud Practitioner then AI Practitioner is the natural order, and the second one is faster once you have the first.
