How to Pass Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-900)
A focused plan to pass Microsoft's Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-900): what it covers, a realistic study schedule, and the mistakes that fail people.
Azure AI Fundamentals (exam AI-900) is Microsoft's beginner-friendly certification for AI literacy on Azure. It is concept-first and requires no coding. This is an independent guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft. If you can recognize common AI workloads and connect each to the right Azure service, you are in the right territory.
What the exam covers
AI-900 is organized around a handful of stable skill areas. The exact weightings shift over time, but the conceptual map is the most useful way to structure your prep:
- AI workloads and responsible AI: recognizing common scenarios and the principles that should guide them.
- Fundamental machine learning: regression, classification, clustering, features and labels, and how models are evaluated.
- Computer vision: image classification, object detection, OCR, and facial analysis.
- Natural language processing: key phrase extraction, sentiment, entity recognition, translation, and speech.
- Generative AI: how large language models produce content, prompts and completions, and where generative fits alongside traditional AI.
A realistic study schedule
- Week 1: AI workloads, responsible AI, and core machine learning vocabulary. Learn the terms until you can define them out loud.
- Week 2: computer vision and natural language workloads, plus the generative AI section. Connect each concept to the Azure service that delivers it.
- Week 3: mixed practice under time, then restudy whichever skill area you keep missing.
Mistakes that fail people
- Treating it like a coding exam. It is not; concepts and service mapping win.
- Passive re-reading. Use active recall: close the material and explain the concept in your own words.
- Ignoring responsible AI. It is a small area with easy points once you have seen the terms.
- Relying on brain dumps, which violate Microsoft policy and teach recognition instead of understanding.
